401k Rollover Services

Options to help you save for the future.

What You Need to Know Before Making the Move.

The enigmatic 401(k) plan.

You know it’s there. You know that a portion of your paycheck – with (sometimes) an employer contribution – is accumulating somewhere in a mysterious account.

It’s there, and it’s doing what it’s supposed to do: help you save for retirement.

But, what do you do with it when you change jobs?

Luckily, you have a few options.

  • Leave your money in the old 401(k)
  • Roll over the assets to your new employer’s plan, if one is available and rollovers are permitted
  • Rollover the 401(k) to an IRA (individual retirement account)
  • Cash out the account value

Plans are held to certain administrative requirements - if your account balance is more than $5000, you cannot be forced out of former employer plan. If it’s significantly less than that amount, however, your former employer may request that you leave the plan.

Now, companies are required to roll over balances between $1,000 and $5,000 into an IRA or leave it in the plan if you fail to notify the employer or investment firm. But, if a check arrives at your doorstep, don’t panic! You still have 60 days to put it into a tax-deferred account before it’s subject to taxes and penalties.

Make sure you understand the differences between retirement savings options. And before you decide what to do with your 401(k), be sure to discuss your options with a financial professional who can help you avoid the common pitfalls of a 401(k) transition/distribution.
