Activate Your EMV Chip Debit Card
Activate By April 25
Please make sure you activate your new MasterCard® debit card no later than April 25th. VISA debit cards will be deactivated April 26 between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM, CST. Please note that you will no longer be able to use a VISA debit card for any transaction after April 26.
Your new debit card features advanced EMV Chip technology. This new chip-based technology provides an enhanced layer of security to your transactions, and makes your new chip card extremely difficult to counterfeit.
Card Still Accepted at Non-EMV Terminals
In addition to the embedded microchip, CRCU cards also have a magnetic stripe on the back. This way you can continue to make purchases at merchants who do not yet have EMV card terminals by swiping your debit card and signing a receipt.
Q: What is an EMV smart chip debit card?
EMV, which stands for Europay, Mastercard and Visa, is a global standard for credit and debit payment cards using embedded microchips. CRCU’s EMV debit cards will have an embedded microchip that allows you to pay at chip enabled terminals. Plus, it provides improved security and protection against fraud.
In addition to the embedded microchip, CRCU cards also have a magnetic stripe on the back. That way you can continue to make purchases at merchants that have not yet upgraded to EMV terminals by swiping your card and signing a receipt.
Q: Why is CRCU switching to EMV smart chip debit cards?
Replacing magnetic-stripe-only cards with our new cards that enables both magnetic-stripe and chip-enhanced payments is one way we can help simplify your purchase experience as technology continues to change.
Q: What are the security benefits of the new EMV smart chip debit cards?
The embedded microchip provides unique data specific to your card and the transaction being processed every time you use it at chip-enabled ATMs or terminals. So, you are better protected from financial criminals.
Q: Do I need to get a metal wallet to secure my EMV card?
No. All of CRCU’s smart chip EMV cards are “contact only cards” and cannot be scanned from a distance. The metal card wallets advertised on TV are not needed to protect your card.
Q: Are there any additional fees associated with the EMV chip-enhanced cards?
No additional fees apply to CRCU’s new EMV cards.
Q: How do I make a transaction with my new card?
At merchants with EMV terminals and if you are traveling internationally, you can rest assured that using a chip-enhanced terminal is simple. At restaurants, a portable terminal may be brought to your table, and the process will be the same as during a store checkout, as described below.
To make a transaction, just follow these easy steps:
- Insert your card into the terminal with the chip facing up and leave the card in the terminal until the transaction is complete. If you remove the card too soon, the transaction will end and your purchase will not be processed.
- Follow the prompts on the terminal's screen.
- You may be required to enter your PIN or sign the sales receipt to complete your purchase.
- When your transaction is complete, always remember to remove your card.
